This time, BREC 2017 is hosted by Curtin University, Malaysia.
This is part of a series of conferences being organised by the participating institutions to enhance research education in the Borneo region and beyond. Its main objective is to help create a research culture within higher learning institutions. One usually neglected way this culture can be promoted and nurtured, is through programmes and strategies that put researchers’ development at the top of their priorities. Researchers’ development is more than providing technical skills and trainings programs; it is about creating the environment that facilitates discussion, interaction, feedback, collaboration, sharing, innovation and independent thinking in a collegial and respectful manner. It is about building an identity of a person who cares about society and contributes to its wellbeing by undertaking focused and meaningful research. However, this noble objective can only be achieved if various players in society –not only universities- understand its importance and play their roles effectively. And for this process to take off, universities in this region should take the lead in creating a platform where business leaders, civil society representatives, government bodies, policy makers and other organizations join efforts and share resources in order to bring about positive changes in society.
Most of the BREC 2017 participants will be research students at various stages of their work. Many of them will need scholarly guidance and collegial support to make progress towards completion of their research degree. This conference will be geared towards providing such guidance and support to the participants. The participants in BREC 2017 can expect high-quality interaction with members from industry, academia, and fellow research students from various universities.
